We are happy to show you a couple more quilts, plus a couple of small things, all done up in red, white, blue, or any combination. We know you all have a red and white, or a blue and white quilt out there! Send them in to our email (iemodernquiltguild@gmail.com), along with the following:

Quilt Details: This is a combination of a couple different patterns. My daughter wanted a flag quilt. I combined a pattern in a magazine with some ideas from Pinterest and a lot of bits and pieces of patriotic scraps.

Quilt Details: This is one is a series of small quilts she has made. This particular quilt was brought to a friend who was undergoing chemo in the hospital in 2019, as it was small and could decorate her room without being in the way. Directions for how to make this can be found in a downloadable PDF pattern on her blog.

This is also from Elizabeth Eastmond, a bigger version of her tiny quilt above. This one is 8″ x 10″ and is made with a sleeve on the back to slip over a dimestore frame. A downloadable PDF pattern can be found here.

My quilt represents my 38 years of teaching kindergarten through 8th grades. When teaching I had many things to concentrate on, so I drew them and appliqued them onto my hair. In the hands I placed an apple and a diploma as a gift of education that I have given to many children. The eight schools where I worked are photographed onto fabric. I also placed girls of different ethnicities and a variety of ethnic fabric to display the variety of students I taught. I’m proud to have positively touched the lives of many children.

Original design: I started with Sew Kind of Wonderful’s Chic Kisses Quilt Pattern, but soon tired of all those pickle dish segments, so branched out on my own. I made pinwheels to augment the block design, and added a vine going up the side. And that’s why I call it the Caterpillar Quilt.

The impetus for this was a challenge to use bit and pieces in our quilt. After a while, I decided it needed a pattern, so I used a 30-degree triangle ruler to give it some definition. I call these “mountains.”

This was one of those UFOs I decided I had to do something with. So I did a lot of cutting and sewing and using up of orphan blocks to get this one to completion.

Welcome/Guest Speaker Introduction – Gayle
Charity – We are collecting charity quilts. The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) for San Bernardino will be our designated charity for distribution to children pulled from their homes in extreme circumstances. Many are taken in the middle of the night and depending on the circumstances they can spend the night at the DPSS. We do not have anyone specifically handling Charity. We are asking for our members to sign-up to help staff the Charity Table at meetings, simply record the information for the person donating and this duty will rotate on a monthly basis. Quilts can be lap or any size for comfort.
Quilt kits are available for guild charity projects. Amy French donated a large amount of Allison Glass fabrics. The kit includes top, binding and backing. The guild has a large roll of batting for members to use for charity quilts. If you reach out to Gayle, she can bring batting in whatever size you need. You aren’t obligated to quilt the projects as we do have resources for that with our members. We appreciate quilt tops also.

Raffles – The raffles this month will be a choice between a scissor/needle threader gift or a Latifah pattern and a spool of thread. Tickets are encouraged and helpful for our guild.
Membership Survey – A survey is being distributed by Gayle for our members to provide some candid feedback about the guild. The surveys will be anonymous, and the results will help shape what we do in the months ahead.

Program – Elizabeth Eastmond “English Paper Piecing”

The first project we learned was traditional hexagon EPP using a basting stitch. An awesome trick Elizabeth shared to begin was utilizing a hole punched in the center of the hexagon to secure the fabric with a pin (versus glue). We began the process to make a flower piece using a light hexagon for the center and dark hexagons to fill out the flower petals. Elizabeth explained how the stitches are long basting stitches and then the stitches to combine hexagon pieces are small and not through the paper.

Our second project was using a ¼” glue stick (Fons & Porter preferred) to essentially secure the fabric around the pieces. Then the construction to secure the pieces together is the same, small stitches. Elizabeth cautioned not to use too much glue on the edge of the pieces as it makes it challenging to get the needle to go through the pieces when securing them together. We were cautioned NOT to trim dog- ear pieces as we’re constructing petals/pieces. Trimming leaves the raw edges exposed on your project.

The new Block Lotto was unveiled for this month called ‘Drunkish’ [see previous post]. She would like it to be in 3 analogous colors – blue/blue green/green. The drawing was also conducted for those that presented blocks for Tri-ball.

Winners of the fat quarter bundle prize for the revenue raffle and the name tag raffle prize were presented with their prizes.

[REMINDER: OUR NEXT MEETING IS MAY 2, 2020.]

For the Urban Challenge, quilts are to be no larger than 24″ in either dimension (w or l). The blue color swatch that was distributed needs to be included in the project in some manner. Linda Rasmussen will be curating the event again. We love her feedback and constructive advice about our work. If you don’t want yours included, you can opt out of that part of the challenge.

Sit-and-Sew is planned for April 18^th, from 10am to 4pm at Quilter’s Cocoon in Riverside, but check our Instagram feed for updates, if there are any. There is a $5 fee payable at the event. Becky shared that the owner of Quilter’s Cocoon recently visited Hoffman Fabrics and she will be getting lots of new fabric in the shop.

If there is to be a cancellation of this event, we will announce it on this blog, our Facebook page or IG. Please check there for further announcements.

An upcoming guild program will be with Laura Green about quilt binding. She will share various binding techniques that she’s learned over the years, many from Helen Frost.

Recipes from the Treats Table at the back of the room

Molasses Cookies

Molasses Cookies from Judy R.
Ingredients:
1/2 c. butter – softened to room temperature
1/4 c. Crisco (I used butter-flavored)
1 c. dark brown sugar1 egg – also at room temperature
1/4 c. molasses
2 1/4 c. sifted all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp salt (optional if you’ve used salted butter)
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice
granulated sugar for rolling cookies in
Directions:
Mix the first 5 ingredients until smooth and creamy. In a separate bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together until well blended then mix into the creamed mixture just until incorporated. Refrigerate dough for a few hours or overnight. Use a measured scoop or roll pieces into the size of walnuts. Roll the tops in the granulated sugar and place them about 2 inches apart on parchment-lined cookie sheet. Flatten slightly with a smooth surface. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 375 for 10 minutes. If you have an oven that is hotter in the back, turn the sheets halfway through. They will be starting to crack but do not yet appear to be “done”. Pull them out anyway! Leave them on the cookie sheet to cool and they will finish baking. Last step: be in the moment and savor every bite.

Ingredients:
1 c. butter or shortening – softened to room temperature
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs – room temperature
2 c. sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
2 c. rolled oats
2 c. of non-sugary wheat-type cereal flakes (Team, Total, Heritage Flakes)
1 c. shredded coconut
1/2 c. nuts
1/2 to 1 cup chocolate chips
Directions:
Mix the first 4 ingredients until smooth and creamy. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, soda and salt until well blended then mix into the creamed mixture just until incorporated. Stir in oats, cereal, coconut, nuts and chocolate chips. Drop by measured scoop or spoonfuls 2 inches apart onto an un-greased cookie sheet and flatten slightly with smooth surface. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 for 10 – 12 minutes. Slide onto a cooling rack.
Last step: have milk handy.

Welcome/Guest Speaker Introduction – Gayle/Laura

Gayle discussed the Road to California quilt exhibit and solicited thoughts and feedback from members regarding the new format for displaying juried quilts (separate hall at the venue). She also recognized Mike’s contribution for all the beautiful photos taken of the quilts displayed. Gayle asked members to please pick-up any quilts that were displayed at Road prior to leaving the meeting today.

Laura introduced our guest speaker and guild member, Simone Bradford. Simone has a long history with art and design and aspired to be an artist since the age of five. Simone started designing her own fabric a few years ago. Simone is excited to be here today and share her expertise on color theory with our members.

Program – Simone Bradford “Color Theory”

Simone shared how colors are part of our ‘toolbox’ in quilting. There are many different ways to approach color. Her presentation today will just gloss over a general primer for color theory for quilters. Color is defined as “different qualities of light being reflected or emitted. When light shines on an object some colors bounce off the object and others are absorbed by it. Our eyes only see the colors that are bounced off or reflected”. (Crayola.com)

Saturation/Chroma is the intensity of color and is determined by the amount of gray in that color. Warm colors can be made ‘cool’ by adding blue and cold colors can be ‘warmed up’ by adding yellow. All fabric printers use the Pantone colors as a basis for fabric production. Colors can evoke emotions. Simone encouraged everyone to utilize colors that evoke the intended emotion of your project. Tints are formed by adding white to the base color. Shades are created by adding black. Tones are created by adding gray.

Color wheels were distributed to everyone and Simone explained how to identify complimentary colors and how to use the tool when planning quilts. The color wheel combinations include: complimentary (black arrows), split complimentary (orange triangles), triad (red triangle), rectangular tetrad (green rectangle), square tetrad (purple square), analogous (3-5 colors adjacent to each other), monochromatic (any number of values of the same color), counterpoint (two-color combinations), and multi-color (up to 12 colors using matching values around the wheel).

We’re happy to welcome back Ruthann, and several guild members gifted her a quilt for her newborn baby.

Retreat – Gayle

Registration is open for the 2020 Retreat. We will have 24 spots this coming year at the Vina Lestonnac in beautiful Temecula Valley, however, the guild will only have 10 rooms for our use. We are not sure how many of each type of room will be available (single/double/triple occupancy) at this time. Deposits are $100 to secure your space and total prices are as follows: $250/triple occupancy, $300/double occupancy, and $400/single occupancy. We will finalize room assignments when it is about 30 days prior to the retreat date. Final payment will be due at that time. The dates for the event are November 9-11 (Mon-Wed)

Block Lotto – Simone

A reminder about the ‘Tri Ball’ January/February Block Lotto project was shared with the group. The details can be found on the guild’s website. Simone shared various examples of how to create really interesting and modern quilts with the completed blocks. One raffle ticket will be provided with each completed blocks. Winner will be drawn in March for all blocks received!

Membership – Judy

Judy mentioned that she believes everyone has renewed their membership for the 2020 year. We had 6 visiting members, one that also joined (yay).

Programs – Laura

March will be an introduction to English paper piecing by our very own Elizabeth Eastmond. It will be an interactive learning experience, not just a lecture. The class kit has a fee of $3.00. Go to this post for information about the projects we will be doing and additional materials you will need to bring with you to the meeting.

April will be our Annual Guild Quilt Challenge. This year will be thoughtfully evaluated by Linda Rasmussen if you’re interested in having her review your project. You will need to provide your name on the front. The quilt will be a mini project less than 24” in size called the ‘Urban’ challenge. A full description is available on the guild’s website. Your project will need to include the 4” piece of the Pantone blue color (classic blue) of the year fabric provided by the guild. The fabric provided is from Pineapple Quilts and is called ‘lapis’ should you wish to purchase more. [See our Program Chairs Becky and Laura for more info.]

Gayle shared that the Ontario Airport has a standing exhibit in the terminal. They have asked us if we might be interested in participating. This is the reason the Board selected a small project for the challenge this year.

A variety of beautiful modern quilts were shared by: Janet Tranbarger, Lynn Hanna, RuthAnn Salera, and Elizabeth Eastmond.

Lynn Hanna shared that there is a movement to make tree blocks (12.5”) in size that can be delivered to a group in Austin as a relief effort for the fire victims in Australia. The group picked a tree theme as trees provide comfort. Lynn will be going to Austin and agreed to take them on the 15th of February if anyone is interested in participating. Welcome/Guest Speaker Introduction – Gayle

Gayle shared Latifah’s history as a founding member of the MQG and also the chapter of the MQG.

Program – Latifah Saafir Lecture “How Many Ways to Sew a Curve?”

Latifah, and her sister, learned to sew from their mother as a young child. She began quilting in 2009, her quilts were heavily influenced by her upbringing between LA and TX. Her earliest projects included bias binding and curves! She discussed her love of using bias tape for artistic elements on the quilt as well as for binding.

Latifah shared her exploration into various techniques such as the six-minute circle method. Latifah showed a variety of her quilts and shared the Clammy Journey with us! Latifah shared that she developed a technique called Pinless Piecing. If you search her on Google, you can find the video that explains how the technique works. She said this technique was used in tandem with the Glammy Clammy!

She has designed three collections with Hoffman Fabrics – Graphic (inspired by LA graffiti street art), Double Dutch (dedicated to her urban childhood), and 1985 (inspired by the Hoffman Archives).

Guild Communication – Gayle encouraged everyone to sign-up to follow our guild on Facebook and Instagram. We utilize social media for announcements related to the meeting location (should a change be needed), upcoming events and other important announcements. Jennifer shared that an email will be sent with an easy link to access updates and communications made to the guild website. Please check your spam folder as sometimes those messages end up there.

Road Challenge – Attendance/Sign-in Reminder to sign-in in the lobby when you attend Road. Last year we were lucky enough to win the challenge prize of $500. We would love to win that again so please take a minute to sign-in on the iPads in the lobby at the Information Desk when you arrive!

Road Atrium Display Quilt Collection – Final Date 1/12/2020 Thanks for everyone that brought the quilts today. All quilts will be turned in to Road for display in the Atrium (lobby) at Road to California. Gayle’s husband, Mike, will come in to photograph our quilts (hopefully) prior to the start of the event. Regardless we will get some wonderful pictures to commemorate the special honor!

Gayle also mentioned that following the end of our meeting today, she asked if anyone has a minute to help her haul the 40+ quilts in her passion to her car, she would appreciate it!

Raffles – Gayle shared the current need for someone to assist on a monthly basis to sit at the table at the meeting and collect funds and hand out tickets. This would be a one-month obligation and a sign-up list was sent around the room for anyone available/interested to sign-up! Gayle will make sure you are reminded just prior to your month so you’re aware.

Charity – We are in need of someone to help coordinate our charity efforts. The job is very fun and flexible. This person would basically be responsible for determining a charity to donate our quilts and make a recommendation to the Board. Gayle shared the importance of this role and the minimal time involved in this role.

Sit & Sew – First Sit & Sew will be held two weeks from today on Saturday, January 18^thfrom 10am-4pm at the Quilters Cocoon.

February Program – Next month will be our very own Simone Bradford to share Color Theory with the guild. You won’t want to miss it!

Block Lotto January 2020 – Simone

Simone shared our January/February block called Tri Ball. Block is two raw geese and a rough-edge applique circle. She showed wonderful examples of the possibilities for the block with several quilt examples. Simone will have full instructions available and template available on her blog as well as on our guild blog later this week. She’s asking that you do the triangles on the block be done in cool colors; applique circles in warm colors and neutral backgrounds. The block finishes at 7 ½”. You will receive a raffle ticket for however many completed blocks you bring. This is a very quick and easy block to make!

Opportunity Quilt – Cat

We are on track to start assembling the blocks. It’s not particularly travel-friendly as it’s a large project (lots of 2 ½” blocks – lots of them!). Cat is off the whole week of Road to CA if anyone is interested in coming by her home to help her sew and assemble the Opportunity Quilt. Goal is to have the quilt completed by February. Please contact Cat if you’re interested and available to help. Cat is also looking to borrow any available sewing machine for the project. Cat provided a brief overview of the Opportunity Quilt project as a fundraiser for our guild. This will continue for the next year and culminate (hopefully, booth space permitting) at Road to California in 2021.

Gayle thanked everyone for joining us at our new location, the Casa Blanca library in Riverside. The meeting room is slightly smaller than anticipated but it should work out for us.

Road to California Atrium Exhibit

The flash drive with quilt photos and list of the guild’s quilts to be exhibited has been turned in to Lisa at Road to California. Lisa said the variety looked good. We are looking to see our quilts hanging at Road.

Christmas Party!! The theme this year is Sweet & Savory. There is a signup sheet for members to either bring a savory or sweet treat. We will be playing the Big Box of Questions and doing a notions exchange. For the notion exchange, please bring a $10 wrapped sewing notion for this game. Also, we are looking for sewing related decorations for the food tables. At the Christmas party we will have a couple brief announcements but no formal business portion. Please plan on attending for a jolly good time. The location will be at the Casa Blanca library, from 2-4 pm on December 7th.

January:

Patty, with Coachella Valley Quilt Guild is here with their 2019 Opportunity Quilt, “Rio de Flores” to sell raffle tickets. In turn, we will be displaying our Opportunity Quilt and selling raffle tickets at their guild next year.

Gayle gave a warm welcome to start off the September meeting.

Guild Vision 2020

This year is our 3^rd year as a guild. The year has been a chaotic due to the continued turnover in Programs. Trish started the year as VP of Programs, and she moved out of state. Shelley volunteered to help out in the interim until we could find a permanent replacement, but then she moved out of the area. As such, it gave the Board the opportunity to put together the remaining programs for the coming year, 2020. We promise that you will not be disappointed with what we have lined up. Stay tuned for more details at the next meeting.

Road to California Atrium Exhibit

A reminder that Mike will be available prior to the October meeting to take photos of your quilt top. If you aren’t able to make the meeting, Gayle will need your pdf photo emailed to her no later than 10/14/19 as all photos are due on 10/15/19. If you plan to submit a quilt, they must be a minimum of 72” long and a maximum of 100” wide, contain a 4” sleeve for hanging, and a label (name, phone number and quilt name). The guild request the quilts be modern so that they can best represent our guild’s modern aesthetic. It’s important to note your quilt does not need to be bound or quilted at this time. The 10/15 requirement is solely for Road to plan the display of our quilts. Quilt drop offs will be the week of January 13^th. We will discuss coordination of this at a later meeting.

IEMQG Officer Elections, Jennifer

Before speaking about elections, Jennifer announced she still has Aurifil swag bags from the August meeting. If you missed the meeting and would like one, please see her at the break.

We will be utilizing Survey Monkey again for this year’s elections. You can vote, by clicking on the link from your phone, tablet, or computer. Please be sure to confirm your contact information (email & phone) at the table with Judy. The Secretary position is open; please see the website for job duties (click on the BYLAWS, and you will see that one of the drop downs is Guild Job Descriptions). We also need a Nominating Committee, at least 2 volunteers. The Board would provide guidance and assistance as required. This is a short time commitment; please let us know if you are interested. Please note, if run unopposed, the President, Gayle; Co VP of Programs, Laura and Becky; Treasurer, Candy; VP of Communications, Jennifer. As this would be Jennifer’s 3^rd term (as our guild is small, we have no term limits), she is open to having a partnership in the position or handing it off entirely. Please let any Board member know if you have any interest in any positions.

Block Lotto, Simone

Simone showed the block lotto submission for Fibo’s Sister. The lucky winner of this month’s block lotto went to Lynn! Simone showed members examples of Tipsy Twofer for the Block Lotto for October / November and the blocks will be collected at the November meeting. Make as many blocks as you want and for each block you will receive one ticket to be entered in the drawing. Colors to be used are black and white and the background is recommended to be low volume fabric. The block tutorial and template will be located on both the IEMQG website and Simone’s blog.

Charity, Rachel

Rachel thanked everyone for all the charity items donated. She is taking 14 donated quilts to Home Instead Seniors. If anyone is interested, she has quilt tops (Laura donated holiday fabrics for quilt tops) and blocks that need to be made into quilt tops. Please stop by the charity table to pick them up and bring your completed quilt (quilted or not) to next month’s meeting.

A reminder that we will be at the Holiday Boutique at Mountain Shadows in Highland, on Saturday, Oct 12^th, from 9 am – 1 pm. Please stop by to shop our table and get a head start on your holiday shopping. If you are making dog leashes, Laura has the hardware for your use. Kris Kringle Holiday Fair will be Wednesday, December 4^th at the Ontario Senior Center from 8 am – 1pm. Pat showed us 18 inch square “cat mats” that are easy to make. It’s a great opportunity to try a new patter with the charity fabrics. She swears cats of all kinds love it for their cat naps!

Program: What Was I Thinking?!? Fabric Challenge (Interactive Guild Presentation) / Cat, MC

Our members went through their fabric stash and brought in their most challenging and “ugliest” fabrics. Cat started off the fun with her own questionable fabric choice! We had a whopping 17 members participate – they had 2 minutes to do a share and let us know how and why they bought the fabric. Audience members had a chance to provide their ideas on how to revitalize or suggest a new use for the fabric. Fabrics were given a new life, a second chance, while others were given away to new homes. A prize was given for participation. Needless to say this fabric challenge program was a huge success!

Road to California Atrium Exhibit

We have 18 quilts committed to the exhibit, but we will need 44 quilts per the show requirements. Photo & measurements are required by the October meeting. Mike will be there to photograph them for you; he will be there early and stay late in order to photograph all quilts brought in. Quilt requirements are as follows: minimum 72” long and a maximum 100” wide, must have a 4” sleeve, a label (quilt name, quilter’s name, date, etc), and modern (this is the Guild’s preference). The show is looking for a variety of quilt styles and colors that best represent the IEMQG.

We have often heard Linda Rasmussen say that we should enter our quilts in shows as often as possible, along those lines, the Glendale Quilt Guild has a Quilt Show every spring. Entries are open to the public so you do not to be a member to submit a quilt. A great opportunity to exhibit member’s quilts to show how talented our guild is.

Charity, Gayle for Rachel

Pat, Lisa and Gayle put together charity kits (including backing) for Homestead Seniors. The Bonnie Hunter pattern included in the kit is easy and quick. Gayle timed herself and completed a quilt in 107 minutes. Laura handed out kits during the meeting.

For the September guild meeting, go through you fabric stash and bring your “ugliest” fabric. We’ll help you decide what to do with it for our featured activity ‘What was I Thinking’ Fabric Share. This will be an interactive event, where members will bring fabric they’re not sure what to do with. They can also share, trade and/or give fabric away.

Fundraising, Laura

The following fundraising events have been scheduled:

Saturday, Oct 12^th, from 9 am – 1 pm (set up is from 7 am – 9 am), Holiday Boutique at Mountain Shadows in Highland. Laura made flyers and handed them out to members to display at local guild meetings, coffee houses, and quilt shops. Laura also updated the list of recommended craft items and provided a wine bottle pattern for this month. We netted about $100 profit from the proceeds of last month’s rummage sale.

Sit and Sew, Jennifer

Jennifer found us a location for future Sit and Sews at the Quilter’s Cocoon in Riverside. Our 3^rd quarter Sit and Sew will be on Saturday, September 21^st from 10 am – 4 pm. There is no Sit and Sew scheduled in the 4^th quarter due to the holiday season. This is a good opportunity to work on charity items or your own projects. We hope to see you there.

Featured Speaker, Natalie Barnes of Beyond the Reef, Aurifilosophy

Shelley introduced our featured speaker, Natalie Barnes, who is Aurifil’s newest thread ambassador. Natalie took us on a journey through the history of Aurifil, from its early beginnings starting in 1957 in Italy. It wasn’t until 1983, that Aurifil procured Egyptian cotton thread for embroidery, and the Aurifil thread as we know it today was born. Natalie reminded us of all the reasons we love Aurifil (and why it’s the go to thread to use in piecing and quilting): natural fiber, strong, minimal lint, colors, variety of weights, and the sheen. She explained each type of thread weight and gave the uses and advantages of each one. Natalie also went over how to read the Aurifil thread label and gave us some neat tips as well. Lastly, Aurifil has taken steps toward sustainability; researching the use of alternate materials for thread spools, and partnering with the Plastic Bank to offset annual plastic production. In addition, they are exploring creative repurposing of spools. Natalie surprised everyone with swag bags. Each bag contained an Aurifil brochure which recapped everything Natalie presented for future reference and a spool of thread. Thank you, Natalie and Aurifil!

Exhibits

The photo will need to be in .pdf format, if you have any issues converting a jpeg to a .pdf document, feel free to send to Gayle and she will convert and submit the photo for you. Chaffey Art Museum Exhibit

Mike has photographed all the quilts and taken panoramic shots as well. Quilt pick-ups will be Sunday, July 20^th from 1-2 pm. Any quilts that have not been picked up by 2 pm, Gayle will take home with her.

Fundraising

The following fundraising events have been scheduled:

July 25^th Rummage Sale at the James Brulte Senior Center, 11200 Base Line Rd, Rancho Cucamonga. Come after 6 pm, there is no meeting fee for non-members to shop.

Oct 12th Holiday Boutique at Mountain Shadows in Highland.

Dec 4th Kris Kringle Holiday Boutique at the Ontario Senior Center.

Please continue making fundraiser items. In September, Laura will do an inventory on what we have to sell. It comes as no surprise that dog related items are very popular and typically sell out, such as leashes, bandanas, clothes. The Guild has purchased hardware for the dog leashes, if you need some to complete your leashes, see a Board member. Also for the Kris Kringle event, children use this event to shop for their parents for Christmas, so we should be mindful of price points.

Charity, Rachel

Rachel has donated quilts that she will deliver to Calicinto Ranch this week. She also wants to set up a Sit and Sew to make lap quilts for seniors at Home Instead. These quilts do not need to be modern or fancy. Looking for lap/wheel chair quilts about 36” x 40”. Candy said she would try to find some patterns for these. Also, it was mentioned that Streak of Sunshine quilts is a pattern that is available free online by googling the name that works good well for lap quilts. If anyone needs fabric, please reach out to Laura.

Christine superbly presented her transition from traditional to modern quilter. Right off the bat, Christine announced that she is a fabricaholic and uses quilting as an excuse to buy fabric. She started sewing in high school and in the summer of 1970, she made her first quilt with her mom’s fabric scraps, flannel was used as the batting and a percale sheet was used for the backing. Christine brought in that quilt, and unfortunately, the seersucker fabric used as since disintegrated. She took a break after that first quilt and ventured back to the world of quilting in the 1980’s when she took a class. She was still disappointed in the fabric choices, typically shades of blue and brown, whereas she was looking for oranges and yellow, or anything bright. In the 2000’s her coworkers convinced her to join a guild and soon after Christine became an Activity Chairperson for their guild’s challenges. A lot of the quilts shown were from her quilt challenges. She started finding more ‘fun’ fabrics, and discovered a love for improv and wonky type quilts. It didn’t take long for Christine to move into modern quilts, and quickly fell in love with black and white quilts, and now likes to focus on mini quilts featuring clean, simple and intricate details. The quilts Christine brought to present were amazing and innovative for their time, especially in a world full of traditional quilts. Thank you for a wonderful and colorful presentation, Christine! We enjoyed the journey through your world of color, improv, and wonky quilts!

Welcome

Gayle welcomed everyone to the IEQMG’s 3rd birthday celebration! Gayle reminisced about the guild’s beginning as a friendship group that eventually turned into the IEMQG shortly thereafter. A few of the founding members are still active in the guild today.

The November retreat at Vina De Lestonnac is full. However, if you are still interested, there is a waitlist. See Gayle to be added to it.

Gayle announced the meeting location for the next two months will be at the Main Library in Riverside (3581 Mission Inn Ave).

Committee Reports:

Raffles/Fundraising/Exhibits, Laura

A raffle chairperson is needed. We have someone for next month, but we need someone permanently going forward. Please contact Laura or any board member if interested.

Our quilts are hanging in the Chaffey Museum. There are over 40 quilts displayed as well as a rocking chair by Alison and a chair by Simone. We received more quilts than the space allowed, as such quilts were returned from members that submitted multiple projects. Everyone that submitted one project was displayed. Laura phoned members whose extra quilts were not being displayed and had the quilts at the meeting for pick-up. On Sunday, June 2nd there is an artist’s reception at the museum from 2-4 pm.

We are exhibiting at Road to California in January 2020. The quilts will be displayed in the atrium of the main exhibit hall. The quilts must be a minimum of 72″ long and a maximum of 100″ wide. Quilts must have a 4″ sleeve. A photo of the quilt tops will be required in October. Additional details to follow.

Opportunity Quilt, Cat

A very enthusiastic Cat, asked for volunteers to donate their time and talents to the first ever IEMQG Opportunity Quilt by making half square triangles (HST). Cat put together kits with directions for HSTs; see Cat at break or after the meeting to sign up and take a HST kit home with you today. Assembled HSTs are due at the July meeting.

Block Lotto, Simone

Simone showed members several of the volume blocks called The I.E. (The Improv Effect) together to show what they could look like as a quilt. The blocks will be collected at the July meeting. The block tutorial is located on both the IEMQG website and Simone’s blog.

Shelley introduced our featured speaker, Dora Cary of Orange Dot Quilts. Dora took us on a journey from herself as a small child in communist Romania in the 70’s through 2008, when she made her first quilt (and became a US citizen). Her schooling and degrees earned in Romania, aided her greatly in becoming a pattern designer. Dora prides herself on making patterns easy and less complicated. Many of Dora’s techniques are non-traditional, and this led her to start teaching her techniques in 2017. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed her presentation of her quilts as indicated by the oohs and aahs heard many times. Dora ended her presentation with a series of 5 questions about her journey. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by Gayle Bennett, President.

Welcome

Gayle proudly announced that our guild won one of the Road 2 California guild participation challenge! She assured us the prize money will be put to good use. She also informed us about the Seven Sisters Quilt Show on June 29^th-30^th in San Luis Obispo. For more information be sure to go to http://www.sevensistersquiltshow.org/

Gayle reminded members that with your paid membership to the guild, you also become a member of the national MQG. Be on the lookout for an email from them with details on how register on their website. One of the perks of membership is the access to the free pattern library. Be sure to check it out.

Gayle was excited to inform the membership that we nabbed a spot at the Vina De Lestonnac Retreat in Temecula for this year’s retreat! The retreat will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 11^th, 12^th and 13^th, starting at 10 am on Monday and ending at 2 pm on Wednesday. We will be able to accommodate approximately 22 quilters. Prices for the retreat are as follows: Single room; $386.00;
Double room: $286.00; Triple room: $236.00; and Day Commuters: $33 per day includes lunch (add $18 to stay for dinner). A $100.00 deposit is due at the time of sign up, which can be paid via PayPal, check or cash. Additional details to follow in the coming months.

After the meeting, Gayle invited members to attend the Executive Board meeting at Shelley’s home.

Fundraising/Exhibits, Laura
Laura announced she had made up more quilt kits for either a charity quilts or craft fair item. She also had fabric for a flash sale. She also brought in post card flyers for the Chaffey Museum Exhibit on May 23^rd and encouraged everyone to take a stack and share. If you didn’t bring in your quilt to show at the exhibit, you can still drop them off at the museum on May 18^th and 19^th.

After a short break, Kim superbly presented “Community and Creativity, a History of Women and Quilting”. Kim gave a short biography of herself: daughter for an antique dealer; lover of all things old; Art History major; ‘American Patchwork’ was the title of her thesis. Kim took us on a quilting journey through the centuries starting in the 17^th century to current time. It was amazing to hear how quilting has transformed the lives of women throughout the ages. Kim taught us to see how quilting became more than just making quilts for bed covers; it was a way to express social concerns, record personal accounts and make political statements. A huge thanks to Kim for an outstanding presentation.
