Meeting Recap: March 2nd

  • The Guild’s March meeting was physically held at the new location, the Arlanza Library is at 8267 Philbin Ave, Riverside, CA 92503, click to see Google map.
  • The 2024 Membership drive is over and the Guild will make its payment for annual dues after the March meeting. Those 2023 members who did not renew may no longer access the “Member’s Only” sections of the Guild website. If there are any errors on access to the website, please email the Guild Board.
  • The Guild welcomed a Zoom guest speaker, Audrey Essary of Cotton & Bourbon. Recognized by Quilt National, International Quilt Festival, and QuiltCon Audrey was a wonderful guest. Her presentation, Finding My Voice in Modern Quilting, was so interesting and detailed. It has inspired many of us to look at the geometry of a circle or radial in a new way. Audrey’s amazing quilt gallery showcases her award winning quilts that she designed and pieced with as few seams as possible or by paper piecing to create splendor uniform radials.
    • See Audrey on PBS Fresh Quilting co-produced by The Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) and KS Productions has three (3) videos of Audrey Using Negative Space, Paper Piecing, and Sewing Curves.
    • Audrey recommends that for a new quilter to begin with a mini quilt when beginning to use her quilting process. As the quilter’s skill set is developed the quilter will have a greater success with larger versions of her designs.
    • Audrey won at Third Place Ribbon at Quilt-Con for her Vortex Radial. See the official Quilt-Con award announcement provided below.
  • After the Quest Speaker: Sharon Burgh sold raffle tickets for the March Quilter’s Raffle Basket.
  • Several members provided some of their personal finishes for submission as charity quilts. See photos below.
  • Reminder Drop-In Sew for March will happen on the 11th and the 25th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It is sew fun. Zoom in and let’s sew. Check your email for Zoom links that are sent out the Sunday prior to the Drop-In Sew on Monday.
  • February/March Tip of the Month: Download the Robert Kaufman Quilting Calculator App from the Apple or Google stores.

  • Start planning to attend our May meeting for our guest speaker, Jacquie Gering’s presentation “Walk and So Much More.” Check out her tutorials provided on her website. Give her credit if you make one of her quilt designs for charity or to sale.

1st 2024 Quilt Challenge:

Recycle / Reuse/ Re-Purpose:

  • Description of Challenge:
    • Incorporating recycled fabrics into quilting projects can contribute to the preservation of the environment while creating beautiful and meaningful pieces of art.
    • When it comes to recycled fabrics the possibilities are endless:
      • repurpose clothing / jeans / T-shirts / baby clothes
      • linens / vintage bed sheets / blankets / table clothes / curtains
      • worn-out quilts
    • Challenge Rules:
      • There are none.
      • The world is your oyster.
      • Go with your heart.
      • Live it up.
    • Reveal at June Meeting – We’d love to hear the story of your selected fabrics.

2nd 2024 Quilt Challenge:

UGLY FABRIC CHALLENGE

  • Gather up your ugliest fabric and bring it to the April meeting.
  • Purge your sewing room of unwanted fabrics.
  • Each quilter will share one ugly fabric (although you can bring many), but no more than you can talk about in two (2) minutes.
  • Ugly fabrics are hung on a “Challenge Board.”
  • Members will have the opportunity to pick fabrics from the “Challenge Board.”
  • Members will use these fabrics in their 2024 projects.
  • Can you identify your old “ugly” fabric while we celebrate how our creative members were able to utilize it in their art.

March 2024 Block of the Month

#3 – Stellar Elegance

The March Block of the Month, Stellar Elegance, is available for download. Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic selected this star because it’s “a delightful challenge.” Brigitte will show you a few fun ways to build this block with templates. Brigitte’s blog post about the Stellar Elegance..

  • Overview of the event:
    • Over ten thousand people from at least 18 countries
    • Over 600 quilts were exhibited.
    • The Guilds Community Outreach Quilt sold quickly. See photo below.
    • Watch video of the awards ceremony
    • See and critique the winning quilts at Quilt-Con.
  • A book of all exhibited quilts is available for $65.00 including shipping, on the MQG website. Stay tuned for additional information when it becomes available.
  • The Guild’s QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt was a success. The quilt sold quickly for $400 to benefit charities in the Raleigh, NC area. Congratulations for all members who helped with this endeavor.

2024 Quilt Retreat

2024 IEMQG Quilt Retreat

Retreat will be held November 4–7th at Vina de Lestonnac in Temecula. The Guild has reserved nine rooms for the 18 members that have paid their deposits. There are three members on the waiting list. Other members who wish to be added to the waiting list, please contact the Retreat Committee. Confirmation of space for those on the waiting list is available in September.

Charity Quilts

To date approximately 12 quilts and pillowcases are planned for delivery to the House of Ruth this month. Below are some of the charity quilts our Guild members provided at the March meeting.

Show and Share

All of the Show and Share at the March Guild meeting were charity quilt submissions. Don’t forget to bring your personal quilt finishes to the April 6th meeting. Your fellow Guild members would love to see them.

2024 Fund Raising

  • Fund raising is necessary for the Guild to carry out is mission, to provide resources to its members and to keep member dues as low as possible.
  • To date fund raising activities include:
    • 2024 Membership drive.
    • Several quilts that were submitted to IE Craft Collective, a non-profit, to try and sell them for the Guild. The Guild receives 70% of sale value while the Craft Collective receives the remaining 30% as commission.
    • A raffle for the new Quilter’s Basket kicked off at the March meeting. The March Quilter’s Basket contains a lovely selections of quilting supplies, notions, and chocolate.

Meeting Recap: February 3rd

  • The Guild’s February meeting was physically at the new location at the Arlanza Library is at 8267 Philbin Ave, Riverside, CA 92503, click to see Google map.
  • The Guild welcomed a guest to the meeting who saw the Guild’s Instagram posts and decided to come visit. It was great to have you at our meeting Christine!
  • Many members brought their lunch and participated in the Saturday February 3rd Sew-In. Some participants worked on their personal projects while others worked on 2024 Philanthropy projects. The Sew-In began at 10:00 am and ended for lunch 12:30 pm. Clean-up and the social time is 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
  • During the Sew-In Kaufman fabric was distributed for 2024 Philanthropy projects. Fabric is still available. There will be future opportunities to participate.
  • Our President Candy Scott and our Charity Chair Gayle Bennett graciously created quilt and pillow case kits that were disbursed at Sew-In to interested members.
  • Sharon Burgh sold raffle tickets for the Quilter’s Raffle Basket and drew the winning ticket for a fortunate member.
  • Out Guide member, Samantha Saturday, spoke about a quilt artist she follows on Instagram: Jennifer Candon with her website is at: https://www.jennifercandon.com/ . Jennifer creates bold works and calls herself a “Textile Muralist”. Samantha showed some images of Jennifer’s studio, creative process and finished works.
  • QuiltCon happens February 22-25th. For those members who cannot attend the Modern Quilt Guild has provided an opportunity to participate from the comfort of our device (phone, table, laptop etc.) where ever we are. You must sign-in on the Modern Quilt Guild website. If you have never signed into the website you must do so first prior to the 15th to make sure your membership works. Don’t wait to the last minute. You might be singing the blues instead of enjoying the online lectures.
    • QuiltCon 2024 Lecture Streaming Pass
    • Stream all the QuiltCon 2024 lectures from home Thursday, February 22 – March 4th at 11:59 pm EST with the purchase of a Streaming Lecture Pass for for $265.00/member! Purchases must be made by Thursday, February 15th, 2024, at 11:59 pm EST. No additional purchases can be made after that time.
  • 2023 Block of the Month reveal had members proudly displaying their modern interpretation of the 2023 BOMs. See photos below.
  • Several members provided some of their personal finishes for Show and Share. See photos below.

#2 – Galaxy Star

Meeting Recap: January 6th

  • The Guild’s January meeting was physically held at SSgt. Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca Library, 2985 Madison Street, Riverside, CA 92504 .
  • Thank you to Laura Greene who provided a review of the Modern Quilt Guide website. Don’t forget to take advantage of all the free quilting resources it provides to IEMQG members.
  • Drop-In Sew occurred on Monday, January 8th and 22nd. A good time was held by all.
  • The IEMQG Board members began the transition from 2023 into 2024. Thank you for your patience as everyone begins to assume their new roles.
  • The Road to California was held at the Ontario Convention Center January 17 – 20th. Did anyone capture photos they wish to share with the group?

Next Guild Meeting: February 3rd Overview:

  • Because Casa Blanca is not available, the next meeting is Saturday February 3, 2024 at a new location. The new location is at the Arlanza Library is at 8267 Philbin Ave, Riverside, CA 92503, click to see Google map.
  • Bring your lunch and beverage.
  • Saturday Sew-In is planned for you to work on anything you want or to sew for the 2024 Philanthropy project. The Sew-In begins at 10:00 am and ends for lunch 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Clean-up and the social time is 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
  • Kaufman fabric is available for charity quilts at the Sew-In.
  • Bring your project, machine, and sewing supplies.
  • Don’t have a project; charity kits and pillow case kits are available for your sewing pleasure.
  • The guild meeting begins at 2:00 pm and ends at 4:00 pm.
  • 2023 Block of the Month Reveal will be held. Bring your top to show the group. Only the top needs to be completed.
  • Drawing for the Raffle Basket will occur. If you haven’t bought tickets bring your money. Tickets are 6/$5.00. This is your last chance to participate.
  • Drop-In Sew are planned for Mondays February 5th and 19th.

January 2024 Block of the Month #1

The January Block of the Month, Bright Star, is available for download. This year “Blockheads” by Moda are ready for your imagination to color, play and experiment with ways to modernize this traditional block.

QuiltCon

Congratulations to IEMQG member Kelley Bachli for getting accepted into QuiltCon!

Kelly was accepted into the Windham Fabrics Challenge. Her quilt,”Gear Box” takes one block and distorts it into different shapes. Her quilting amplifies the distortion to make her quilt a real show stopper! Only about 20 percent of the submissions to QuiltCon 2024 were accepted this year.

August Meeting Recap

Our August meeting gave our members a jump start on the holidays with plenty of inspiration for making holiday gifts. Laura Green shared the Laura Lindsay book, “Sewing to Sell” that included 16 simple projects like totes, makeup bags and pin cushions. Members also shared their projects and ideas including bags, tablet/phone covers, aprons, gnomes and more (see below). Our meeting was also full of important updates on our retreat, our QuiltCon quilt, QuiltCon registration, sewing machines for sale, our block of the month program, and our newest quilt challenge, “Maximalism”. Be sure to read all the way to the end so you don’t miss out on any important announcements.

QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt

The Modern Quilt Guild has announced the 2024 Community Outreach Challenge theme: Symmetry.

Please Join us! We are making hundreds and hundreds of 3.5-inch squares to arrange into a symmetrical design.

To add a fun twist, we are using scraps! Please bring us scraps that match the color palette.

July Meeting Recap

We kicked off July with a fantastic meeting filled with inspiration and beautiful quilts starting with our Modern Wedge Challenge reveal, moving into a colorful show and share, and wrapping it up with a temperature quilt presentation that got us all thinking about starting our own temperature quilt. Have you ever considered making a temperature quilt but didn’t know where to start? IEMQG member, Patti Reyes, gave us a simple and inspiring 4-step recipe for success. She also showed us how to get our kids involved, how to use our stash, and most importantly how to easily collect temperature data. Did you miss her presentation, or would you like to revisit it? A huge THANK YOU to all of our members who participated in or donated to our IEMQG Garage Sale! With your help, we made over $1,300. These funds will help pay for in-person speakers, classes, and will help us to keep our annual dues low.

August Meeting and Sew Day: Saturday August 5th – Save the Date!

Our August Meeting is all about the Holidays! Beginning at 10 am, IEMQG Member Christine Sharpe will give us her Holiday Bag Tutorial. Bring your sewing machine and supplies so you can sew along. You will need 1/2 yard of background fabric (white), an 18”x 24″ piece each of batting and lining fabric, an assortment of Holiday fabrics and thread to match your background fabric. If you would rather work on personal project, please join us anyway. Don’t forget to bring a lunch. Sewing starts at 10am, at SSgt. Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca Library. Meeting starts at 2pm. Bring your Holiday Gift Ideas to share at the meeting.

June Meeting Recap and our Guilds 7th Birthday!

Guest Speaker Veruschka Zarate

of Pride and Joy Quilting

We celebrated our guild Birthday this month with our fabulous guest speaker, Veruschka Zarate. She generously and enthusiastically shared her quilting journey with us, from her first paper pieced quilt design, a simple yet bold bottle of nail polish, to her award winning family portrait quilt, “Pride and Joy” and on to her most recent endeavors, “Joan of Arc” and “Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring”. She was so willing to share her quilting ups and downs, her personal doubts and challenges, and most importantly her steady and humble climb to notoriety in the modern quilting world. We were truly refreshed by Veruschka’s generous spirit and her willingness to share her tips, techniques and learning experiences. She was truly inspiring. Thank you, Veruschka for such a wonderful presentation to our guild!

July Meeting: Saturday July 1st – Save the Date!!!

Are you ready for our July meeting? It’s our Modern Wedge Challenge Reveal! Its not too late to participate. You only need a completed quilt top. Get all the details right here!

We will also learn all you need to know about temperature quilts. We’ll learn how easy it is to collect temperature data, and create a color palette. We’ll also get to see lots of inpiration!

AIDS Memorial Quilt

The Palm Springs Mizell Center is commemorating the AIDS Memorial Quilt. If you would like to pay tribute to someone affected by AIDS, you are invited to create a quilt panel to be included in their exhibit. Panels are due on October 15th, 2023.

Their community partners include Eisenhower Health, The Coachella Valley Quilt Guild, KGay-Gay Desert Guide, LGBT Center of the Desert, H+ARP, Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, and Latinos Unidos.

May Meeting Recap

WE HAD A SEW DAY!

If you missed our sew day, don’t worry. We had so much fun, we’re already planning another. We met Saturday morning at 10 am, and our beloved President, Candy Scott, brought us boxes and boxes of free remnant fabric for charity quilts straight from the Robert Kaufman Co. warehouse. If you would like to take free fabric to make charity quilts, make sure you send us a picture of your finished quilt.

Treasurer, Gayle Bennett, inspired us with some amazing scrappy quilt ideas, and we all dove right in, sorting fabrics and cutting strips for scrap quilts. Don’t worry, there’s still some fabric left. It will be available at our June meeting.

April Meeting

Programs Vice President, Laura Green showed us loads of Wedge Quilt inspiration to motivate us for our July Modern Wedge Challenge Reveal. She also showed us how to construct a set-in circle. Ector Simpson, from Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs, spoke to us about participating in the Aids Quilt project. This is the project’s 37th anniversary, and to continue to call attention to HIV/AIDs, Ector is working with the founders to bring quilt panels to Palm Springs. He is also encouraging local quilters to make panels.

Panels can be made to remember someone who has been lost to Aids or to celebrate a survivor. Panels must be completed by October 15, 2023.

We’re having a Yard Sale! Guild Members, Christine Sharpe and Kate McCarthy are organizing the event which will be held on June 17th from 8 am to noon.

Please donate items by bringing them to our June meeting. Please only bring items in good condition. Unsold items will be donated.

This is a fundraiser for our guild. Fundraisers help us pay for workshops and speakers and also help to keep our dues low.

Veruschka was the 2022 QuiltCon Viewer’s Choice winner and best piecing winner for her quilt titled “Love Quilt”. Veruschka was inspired to make this award winning quilt following a disappointing quilting – related setback. Guest Speaker Debi Gardner

This month our Guest Speaker was IEMQG Member, Debi Gardner. She shared her journey into modern quilting and many of the beautiful quilts she has made along the way. Debi can do it all; appliqué, English paper piecing, improv, tiny piecing, art quilts…

You name it, she has given it a try, and regardless of the method, her quilts are stunning. Her use of color and contrast are outstanding. Thank you, Debi, for sharing your quilts with us.

May 6th Meeting

In May we are meeting at a new location, SSgt. Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca Library, 2985 Madison St, Riverside, CA 925043.

We are having a Sit and Sew event in the morning beginning at 10 am. Our meeting starts at 2 pm. Laura Green will be our program speaker and she plans to have lots of Modern Wedge Inspiration to kick start our Modern Wedge Challenge. Get the challenge details here. Be sure to bring your sewing machine, sewing supplies and a small project to work on. Maybe you’ll want to bring your wedge project!

Evolving Threads heads to International Quilt Festival!

Evolving Threads is a group of IEMQG members and friends who have started a monthly 12″ x 12″ quilt challenge with the goals of camaraderie and artistic growth. Every month the members individually create original mini quilts inspired by a prompt. They then meet to share their work. Evolving Threads applied for an opportunity to exhibit their work at the International Quilt Festival – Long Beach, July 6th – 8th, and they were accepted! Congratulations to Evolving Threads!

March Meeting Recap

March is National Quilting Month and March 18th is National Quilting Day. Find ways to celebrate our craft like hanging your quilts proudly in your home or even outside! Make a charity quilt! This month we started the celebration by revealing our members’ 2022 Block-of-the-Month quilts, reviewing QuiltCon and enjoying some fantastic Show and Share items from our talented members. 2022 Block-of-the-Month

The 2022 Block of the Month program was designed and lead by member Evelyn Rienstra. She was inspired by Los Angeles mid century modern architecture like that of the “Hollywood Metro Apartments” that mimic the art of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. All 12 of Evelyn’s block patterns are available on Members Corner. See below how each quilter infused their own artistic style into their finished quilts and quilt tops. Isn’t it amazing that each of these quilts came from the same set of block patterns?

QuiltCon Review

IEMQG member, Michelle Nichols presented a review of the quilts at QuiltCon 2023 in Atlanta, GA. She noted that a big trend this year was the use of colored quilting thread to enhance the the color and texture of quilts.

IEMQG member, Carl Brown had his quilt, “New Beginnings” juried into QuiltCon in the Small Quilts division. Congratulations, Carl!
